Effect of socioeconomic status on depression£ºFocusing on the mediating effect of regular exercise

Abstract
Research Purpose: Depression is a serious mental problem in older adults. Low socioeconomic status is known as a risk factor for depression. The present study sought to examine the relationship between socioeconomic variables, regular exercise, and depression.

Methods: Using structural equation modeling technique, we examined the effect of socioeconomic variables on depression through regular exercise.

Results: We found that there were significant relationships between socioeconomic status indicators and regular exercise, and significant relationships between socioeconomic status indicators, and regular exercise and depression. More importantly, the authors found that there were significant indirect effect of socioeconomic status indicators on depression through regular exercise.

Conclusion: Our findings suggest that for older people who present depressive symptoms with low socioeconomic status, providing regualr exercise tailored to individual will reduce depression symptoms.
